Written by Edgar C. Balasta

Sorsogon has marked to be a place with the happiest people on earth  for gathering more or less 10,000 participants in the  innovative fun run event, the Color Run with the Beat: Run for Peace and Unity last June 28, 2014 during the Pili Festival.

“The event truly reflects Pili Festival’s celebration of thanksgiving for having a bountiful harvest of the most palatable Pili in the world and symbolizes the warmth of Sorsoganons,” commented by a tourist from Zambales who were invited by a friend to attend the event.

The event has caused road closure of two main roads Rizal Street and Magsaysay Street as thousands of runners flocked Sorsogon baywalk.

“Color Run with the Beat brought fun and excitement to the runners they never had before as they pass through many colors, dance and water obstacles in the race. Most of the participants came from schools, various agencies, organizations, barangays and different municipalities.” Edgar Balasta, event organizer said.

The activity is not all about fun. It has launched three characterization of the city such us Pulis Kasanggayahan – tourist friendly policemen, Mas Matanos na Media (more righteous mass media practice), and So Sorsogon – a unique branding of Sorsogon tourism  by Bobet Lee –Rodrigueza as he support Mayor Sally Lee’s re-imaging program of Sorsogon as a Character City.

With immensely excited runner in  white shirts, the event was started with a prayer, a synchronized warm up and a symbolic throwing of colored powders for peace and unity.

The runners were grouped by  thousand in which each group passed four colored water fountain stations soaking the runners with different colors. As they pass the street, they were thrown colored powders in eight  stations such as  green, yellow, orange, red, violet, blue and lemon yellow. This has given full of fun to the runners mostly to the kids, who even rolled down in the ground to get their favorite colors.

The group of runners were obliged to stop in four dance stations where they have to dance in one minute before they were allowed to proceed to the next station. Adult and young were obliged to dance at a techno tunes leads by various groups assigned in different color stations. Sorsogon Sumba group lead the first dance group, followed by TLC who gave a youthful dance move infront of Jollibee.

Dancing with the PNP ladies has given new hypes to the runners who yelled while grooving along Camp Escudero area. After two kilometers, the participants were stopped by CCDI Physical Education dance group infront of Villa Isabel and did an aerobic dancing.

The runners were more excited in the festival themed live music accompaniment by the Community Based Theater Arts Group infront of the Provincial Capitol building.

Welcomed by blue powders the runners grooved, shouted in CCDI dance station as they perform a wacky-hip-hop dance moves for their dance station finale lead by Wildcats dance troupe.

In the finish line the runners were received by grand concert of the Rodrigueza Band who lead the party until 10:00 a.m. in Sorsogon Baywalk.

“So Sorsogon, so unique, so different, so exciting!” This is how Provincial Administrator Bobet Lee Rodrigueza proudly described the event.
