Wawa Alfelor of UNEP bids farewell at 97
Written by Edgar C. Balasta

UNEP matriarch, Dr. Remedios Dy-Sanchez Rigoroso-Alfelor peacefully joined our Creator at the ripe age of 97 around 10:18 in the morning of May 28, 2012 at Mother Seton Hospital, Naga City.

Her demise was a great loss to the University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP) and sister institutions including the Computer Communication Development Institute with seven branches.

“We lost our dear Wawa but we know that she will always be with us. Yes, our family is in deep sorrow and in grief yet we find solace in the sympathy and prayers at this difficult time of bereavement,” expressed by Atty. Remelisa Alfelor-Moraleda, UNEP President.

Dr. Wawa Alfelor and her husband the late Gov. Felix Alfelor, Sr. established the University of Northeastern Philippines in 1950s. After decades, the Alfelor’s siblings established the Felix O. Alfelor, Sr. Memorial College in Del Gallego, Felix Alfelor Foundation College in Sipocot and the Buhi Lyceum in Buhi all in Camarines Sur.

In 1980s her son, Atty. Felix “Nancing” Alfelor, Jr. followed the footsteps of his parents and established the Partido College in Goa, Camarines Sur. IN 1989, Sir Nancing established a special schools for Information Technology – the Computer Communication Development Institute now with campuses in Iriga City, Naga City, Legazpi City, Goa and Pili of Camarines Sur, Tabaco City and Sorsogon City.

Undeniably, Wawa’s influence in education sector in the Bicol region can never be denied. Elsewhere in Bicol and in the whole country there exist professionals in various fields produced by UNEP and its sister schools.

Wawa, all her life has unselfishly fulfilled her mission to the world as an education ambassador. She was known to many Bicolanos as a compassionate, loving and an activist of quality education most especially to the poor.

“I am so lucky to be one of Wawa’s students. Her devotion to education inspired me to become a teacher that is why I am in academe today. She is the most outstanding educator I will always remember in my whole life ” Said by Mr. Edgar Balasta, CCDI Sorsogon Administrator and a former student of Dr. Alfelor in the University of Northeastern Philippines.

Ms. Deli Alfelor-Tibi, UNEP Executive Vice President and concurrently the university’s VP for Finance knows things will never be the same without her dearest mother.  Ms. Deli personally took care of Wawa until the last minutes of her life.

“I will always remember her enigmatic smile, but most of all I will surely miss her dear presence.  No more will I hear the continuation of the song, let me call you sweetheart since Mama can not utter those hymns anymore,” Ms Deli tearfully recalled.

Wawa’s presence stands out wherever she goes. Her heart goes with the less privileged. Her deep religiosity has touched the hearts of many and bonded her family so strongly together. Indeed, Wawa will be greatly missed.
